Effect of Foreign Gas on Gain and Rotational and Translational Temperatures for Regular and Sequence Band Transitions in Waveguide CO_2 Laser

From the measurement of small signal gain for the regular and sequence band transitions in a waveguide laser medium, the effect of foreign gas on the gain coefficient and rotational and translational temperatures is examined and compared with that in the ordinary laser medium. The rotational temperature is always well defined and is apparently higher than the translational temperature at any partial pressure of the foreign gas in the gas mixture. It is found that N_2 and He cause opposite effects on the temperatures. The total and partial derivatives of the temperatures for the variables of the foreign gas pressure and the injected power are obtained. The processes of energy transfer and the relaxation mechanism are discussed.
