Field Emission Microscope Observations of H_2- and Metal-Phthalocyanines

Field emission microscope (FEM) observations were carried out on H_2-, Fe-, Co-, Ni- and Cu-phthalocyanines vapor-deposited onto a tungsten tip. The various molecular image stabilities were quantitatively determined and compared among these phthalocyanines. About 3O% of the four- and two-leaf patterns disappear immediately after they appear, irrespective of the kind of central atom in the phthalocyanine. Some of the remaining patterns gradually disappear according to the first-order reaction rate law, and the ones left have considerable stability. The probability of the patterns being stable increases with the increase in the number of d-electrons of the metal atom in the phthalocyanine. The once-stabilized four-leaf patterns also disappear upon raising or lowering of the tip voltage or raising of the tip temperature. Some of these behaviors differ depending on the kind of phthalocyanine while others do not.
