Electromagnetic field generated by traveling charges in a beam duct and resulting forces exerted on them are studied. Potentials for ellipsoidal charge distributions are computed in a cylindrical duct and in a parallel plate duct, with the aid of Green functions. The results are compared with corresponding potentials in free space. For a duct with resistive wall, the whole field is expanded in a parameter α, which is proportional to (resistivity)^<1/2>. Using general expressions for the first order terms, the decelerating force on the charge, which makes up for the Ohmic energy dissipation, and the transverse forces, which cause the resistive instabilities, are obtained.
