Pulse Shortening Effect in Linear Accelerators

The injection current into an electron linear accelerator has a threshold beyond which the emerging accelerated beam is unstable in the latter part of the pulses, resulting in partial or complete loss of the output current. The experiment and the theoretical analysis show that the effect is due to RF excitation of the accelerator in an unwanted mode. Several ways to suppress the excitation are discussed.
