The Marechal method of aberration balancing was successfully applied to spherical and parabolic reflectors and to various types of a single thin lens in the previous papers [Japan. J. appl. Phys. 5 (1966) 310 and 924]. In these papers, the third- and fifth-order aberrations only were taken into account so that the results obtained were limited to certain areas of field angles and F-numbers. The present paper extends the previous theory up to the seventh- and ninth-order aberrations. A spherical reflector is treated as a specific example and the results obtained are compared with those in one of the previous papers. The effectiveness of the present method is discussed and it is concluded that the use of the aberration terms up to the seventh-order is sufficient when a wide field angle is taken into considerations.
