The effect of diffuse illumination on two-beam Fraunhofer holography is investigated experimentally using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer modified for obtaining a hologram. Reconstructed images are compared with the theory and discussed under the relation with the distortion term. The improvement of image degradation due to the distortion term is shown by means of diffuse illumination. When diffuse illumination is not employed in the hologram-making process, there appears in the reconstructed images the spatial filtering effect which can, however, be avoided using diffuse illumination. Detailed discussions on this filtering effect in a hologram are conducted.
