The Marechal method of aberration balancing is well known but it has only been studied from the theoretical point of view. The purpose of the present paper is to outline the method briefly and to apply it to spherical and parabolic reflectors. A relationship is derived expressing maximum permissible focal length as a function of field angle with the F-number as a parameter. Finally, the surface is determined in image space over which the Strehl definition is a maximum. This paper considers the third- and fifth-order aberrations so that the results developed are applicable for certain limited areas of field angles and F-numbers.
