A Two-Color Display Device Utilizing Field-Induced Pitch Contraction in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal with Negative Dielectric Anisotropy

A new two-color display device (CPT-cell) is made by using the homogeneously aligned mixture of nematic (MBBA) and cholesteric (CN) liquid crystals. The coloring is attributable to the optical rotatory dispersion of cholesteric planar texture. The change of two colors is performed by discrete pitch contraction under an applied a.c. field. The concentration of CN is an important factor for gaining high purity color, and about 3-3.5 wt% is obtained as suitable for the present CPT-cell with a nominal value of 9 μm thickness. The driving condition of the field is also examined. CPT-cell has such favorable features as a notably short rise time and recovery time, wide view angle, and good uniformity of color phase.
