Effect of Blaze Angle on the Efficiency of Grazing Incidence Spectrometers

The problem of diffraction of X-rays by a blazed grating at grazing incidence is studied with certain simplifying assumptions. The results are expressed in terms of a form factor |F(λ,θ_i,θ_r,Δθ)|^2 for the grating. It is shown that the efficiency at the blazed condition becomes higher with decreasing values for the ratio of blaze angle Δθ to grazing incidence angle θ_i. for a given plane surface reflection coefficient. Methods currently used to fabricate curved gratings, how-ever, place an additional restriction on the smallest blaze angles that can be used in practice.These results and also the dependence of the wavelength for maximum response on blaze angle can be used as a basis for evaluation of blazed gratings for use in a given X-ray region.
