The reaction of iodine with silver at temperatures from 150 to 300℃ has been studied with a quartz crystal microbalance and by X-ray diffraction. Below 200℃, the reaction approximately obeys the parabolic rate law and the reaction rate decreases with increasing temperature. The diffusion of silver may determine the reaction rate in this iodination, and the adsorption of the iodine gas and the crystal structure of the α-AgI films may influence the diffusion to lead to cause the observed temperature dependence of the reaction. Above 200℃, the reaction obeys the linear rate law which may be due to a phase boundary reaction, and its kinetic energy is roughly estimated to be 5 kcal/mol. The relation between the parabolic and the linear iodination of silver is discussed.
