Electron Microscopic Studies of Growth and Morphology of Te Crystals Prepared by Vacuum Deposition

TEM and SEM were made on Te crystals vacuum-deposited on cleaved NaCl surfaces. At the initial stage of the deposition, semi-spherical crystals grew with random orientations on the substrates. On the substrate at room temperature, they became large keeping the same shape with increasing film thickness. On the substrates above 80℃, they grew into slender crystals elongating along the c-axes. The slender crystals predominantly grew with the (112^^-0) or (101^^-0) plane parallel to the substrate and had separate tips like a swallow's tail. The sides were {101^^-0} planes and very smooth. It is proposed that the unusual growth of these crystals is derived from the formation and growth of a two-dimensional nucleus and the difference of bond energy at the corners of the Te crystal.
