There is a pressing need today aiming at a longer service life by evaluating the durability of ships such as LNG carriers, Double hulled VLCC (DH VLCC) and offshore structures. Moreover, a formal assessment of their durability is indispensable for a life extension plan of existing ships. Under these circumstances, the authors have studied a total life assessment system which consists of condition survey /assessment format, life prediction technique and availability assessment method. Corrosion protection and fatigue strength of the structures in connection with inspection-maintenance are the most important problems to be studied on the life assessment. The authors have carried out comprehensive studies on these matters, and proposed a total life assessment system which includes a corrosion protection system and fatigue assessment system with a proper inspection-maintenance guideline. This paper summarizes the results with some revisions and additions
