There is a pressing need to develop an advanced technology which supports all items relevant to safety such as design, construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of ships and offshore structures. Such a technology is a synthetic and qualitative assessment system by which all the items are simultaneously taken into account. To this end, this Society has carried out comprehensive studies at it's Research Institute and proposed a total life assessment system in 1991. The relevant guidances have been issued in this Spring for reference to all of concerns. The authors executed a case study on it's application to a life extension project as an assumed model of hull structures of DH VLCCs. This paper briefs outlines of the proposed assessment system introduced in the guidances with background information and their application to a life extension plan as a result of the case study.
