This paper reports on the application of a probabilistic corrosion model used to establish more rational criteria for corrosion margins and permissible corrosion levels. A series of formulas was developed in order to evaluate the impact of these criteria on the reliability of structural members affected by diminution in thickness due to corrosion, taking plate thickness measurement (gauging) procedures into account. In order to evaluate the effect of standards in these procedures on decision-making, such as whether or not to renew a member or carry out additional gauging, sample numerical calculations were made for the lower part of bulk carrier hold frames. From the results of these calculations, it was demonstrated how the scope of gauging impacts the effectiveness of the standard used for making the decision to renew a member when carrying out maintenance to secure the target reliability of the structure.
