In a conventional thin walled beam theory, transverse sections of a beam is assumed being rigid, and attentions are focussed on the longitudinal deformation and stresses. This assumption is acceptable, when the beam is transversely stiffened sufficiently by frames and bulkheads. On the contrary, considering a thin walled beam with weaker transverse members, its transverse section may deform significantly by the shearing effect so-called racking. In order to reduce racking deformation, the optimal structural patterns of large openings of transverse bulkheads are searched by numerical computations, in which transversely stiffened thin walled beam is idealized as a three-dimensional framed structure. The racking parameters, which are defined to indicate the deformation of the openings in the bulkheads, are calculated and compared with the corresponding experimental measurements. Cracking failures caused by racking deformation are sometimes found at the intersections of transverse girders and frames, and also at the corners of openings in partial bulkheads. The racking parameters of the openings in the bulkheads are obtained by the total hull girder analysis including racking deformation. Combining the racking parameters so obtained and the stress concentration factors of the brackets attached at the intersections of the transverse girders calculated by the finite element analysis, depths of girders and radius of rounded bracket are properly determined in such a that the maximum local stresses are within allowable levels. Numerical computations are carried out for a car/container carrier, whose bulkheads have large openings for vehicles access on decks. The rolling angle of 27 degrees under the fully loaded condition is applied as its racking load, which is suggested in a classification note of DnV. Strength of the intersections of the transverse girders and the local stresses around the openings of partial bulkheads are found to be very sensitive to the racking deformation of the hull girder.
