In order to study low-n global modes in a heliotron/torsatron plasma (n is a toroidal mode number), a technique to manipulate the output from the full three-dimensional equilibrium code VMEC into a form where it can be used as input for the two-dimensional averaged stability analysis code STEP has been developed. For plasmas in the Heliotron-E and the ATF stellarators, we compare this new VMEC-STEP code results with the results by the STEP code (the combination of the two-dimensional STEP equilibrium code (STEPEQ) and the STEP stability code (STEPST) ) . We get reasonable agreement between them. Advantages of the VMEC-STEP code over the STEP code are discussed. Correct input data such as the position of the resonant surface are given to the STEPST code from three-dimensional equilibria solved by the VMEC code. It is also demonstrated that we can analyze MHD equilibria and stabilities of plasmas with higher beta value by the VMEC-STEP code than by the STEP code.
