Two species of mosquitoes, Anopheles sinensis Wiedemann and Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, are the main species attracted to the mammalian domestic animals in Japan. The diurnal resting habit of these mosquitoes has hitherto been unknown. In this paper, the results of the author's comparative studies on the density of the resting populations of these mosquitoes in the stables and bushes were reported. Between the stables and bushes there is a bank of Chikugo River. The results were summarized in Fig.2 and Table 1. Anopheles sinensis was found in largest numbers in the bushes than the stables, and the reverse was true in the case of Culex tritaeniorhynchus. These facts may indicate that Anopheles sinensis is an outdoor-resting species and Culex tritaeniorhynchus is an indoor-resting species. Anopheles sinensis is the important vector of propagating Setaria spp. in Japan. The temperature and humidity in the bush was higher than those in the stable. Therefore, the bush seems to have a close connection for the epidemics of the filariasis of domestic animals, because the period of development of the larvae of Setaria spp. in the body of mosquuito is short under the conditions of high temperature and humidity. Number of resting individuals in the population of Anopheles sinensis in the bush was changed wtih the distance from the blood-sucking place of this mosquito. At Point 4 where the distance recorded from the blood-sucking place was 400m, this mosquito was found very few in number, and the engorged female could not be taken at Point 3 where the distance recorded from the blood-sucking place was 300m. Therefore the effective flight range of this mosquito must be very narrow. The number of males recorded in the survey was 8 at Point 0, 18 at Point 1, 12 at Point 2, 11 at Point 3, 1 at Psint 4 and 7 at Point 5. According to the number of males and females collected in this survey, the copulation of this mosquito seems to occur within the limits of 100-300m from the blood-sucking place in this area where the breeding place is not far off.
