From the dissociation of Anabaena variabilis phycobilisomes four phycocyanin (PC) and four allophycocyanin (APC) subparticles species were isolated. In high phosphate a 14.5 S APC fraction was capable of associating with an APC trimer (6.1 S) fraction at the ratio of 2 : 4 to yield 23 S APC particles. The 23 S APC particles by electron microscopy were square in shape with the dimension of 16 × 23 nm, strongly resembling the core of native phycobilisomes. When the 23S APC particles were mixed with PC subparticles, phycobilisomes resulted which were indistinguishable from native phycobilisomes in shape as well as in the capacity of transferring excitation energy. It appears that phycobilisomes consist of two far-emitting APC moieties, each of which has contact with one PC rod.
