Photosynthetic lamellar fragments isolated from photoautotrophically grown cells of Anabaena variabilis were tested for their methyl viologen photoreduction activity by coupled oxygen uptake in the presence of CMU. Four kinds of organic acids, glycolate, malate, succinate and isocitrate, were found to serve as electron donors of photosystem I, bypassing photosystem II, as in the case of reduced DCPIP. Spectro-photometric measurement revealed that the dark reduction of photooxidized cytochrome f and P700 was markedly accelerated if one of the four organic acids was present.
