An investigation was made to determine the effective time for CO_2 treatment in overcoming self-incompatibility in Brassica. CO_2 was effective when supplied to a self-pollinated flower while hundreds of pollen grains were germinating on the stigma. Since the effective time coincides with the attachment of pollen tubes to papilla cells, it is thought that CO_2 produces a metabolic change in these cells during attachement.
