This investigation of the behavior of self-pollinated pollen tubes on stigma showed that the layer of the cell wall of the papilla disappeared at the contact point with the pollen tubes. The final barrier inhibiting self pollen-tube growth seems to be in the cellulose-pectin layer of the papilla cells.
