Alkyl derivatives of p-hydroquinones were examined as electron donors for the electron transport chain in spinach chloroplasts. Hydrophobic hydroquinones with long side chains donate relatively more electrons to photosystem 1, while pydrophilic hydroquinone and methylhydroquinone donate electrons specifically to photosystem 2.
