Treatment of chloroplasts with p-nitrothiophenol in light causes specific inhibition of photosystem II activity. The inhibition obeyed first-order kinetics with respect to light intensity. The life time of the light-induced state of chloroplasts, which is required for p-nitrothiophenol inhibition, was analyzed using intermittent illumination with flashes at different intervals. The half life time thus determined was 230 msec.
