Phospholipid changes associated with the cold hardiness of cortical cells from poplar stem

Phospholipids from poplar bark were fractionated into 6 components using column chromatography on silicic acid. These were identified as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified components. Major phospholipids in the bark were phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine. Their contents were inversely related to the environmental temperature; showing a remarkable increase at 0℃. But, the triglyceride content decreased rapidly at 0℃. In our experiments, a hardiness increase was always accompanied by a concomitant increase in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine. These phospholipids appear to play an important part in increasing the hardiness of cortical cells. Our results also suggest that some profound changes occur in the membrane components along with the variation in hardiness in the cortical cells.
