Thermal treatments at different temperatures were performed on the rubbed polyimide alignment layer for liquid crystal display. With increasing the temperature of thermal treatment, the pretilt angle of liquid crystals 4-cyano-4'-n-pentylbiphenyl on PI surface decreased gradually, together with the decreasing of degree of the surface atomic order. In the meanwhile, the surface microgrooves produced by rubbing still existed and changed little at different temperatures of thermal treatment. All results demonstrate that rubbing caused the polymer chains to orient orderly along the rubbing direction and formed an anisotropic surface. High temperature thermal treatment made the polymer chains immigrate and decreased the degree of surface chain order, thus affecting the alignment property. It is proposed that the uniform alignment of LCs on rubbed surface is caused by the intermolecular interaction between the LC molecules and the oriented polymer chains induced by rubbing.
