A special polymide with function group of strong polarity on main chains is designed and synthesized to investigate the alignment mechanism of liquid crystal on rubbed polimides. AFM is utilized to observe the face of rubbed polyimides. The polyimides rubbed with different depth show different alignment ability. The films rubbed with less depth have lower thermo-stability. However, the rubbing-induced grooves seem same. This is seldom seen in sommon polyimides. The results show that the inter-molecule force between the liquid crystal molecules and the polarized polyimides decided the alignment, and the grooves created in rubbing process are not the main reason for the alignment. Further more, we propose a model for the changes of polymer in rubbing process.
