Two new tetranortriterpenoids, mahonin and secomahoganin, have been isolated from the cotyledons of seeds of Swietenia mahagoni. The structures of these compounds were determined by the use of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2-D NMR) techniques (^1H-^1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), ^1H-^<13>C COSY, and ^1H-^<13>C long-range COSY) and assignments of their ^1H-and ^<13>C-NMR signals were performed. A possible biosynthetic pathway to these tetranortriterpenoids is proposed.
