Study on Explosive Welding of Austenitic Stainless Steel to 80 kg/mm^2 Class High Strength Steel

Explosive welding of austenitic stainless steel flyer plate to HT80 high strength steel parent plate has been experimentally discussed by the preset angle configuration method. The results obtained are as follows. Satisfactory bonds between stainless and HT80 steels are achieved by a combination of adequate explosive charge mass and preset angle, and these values of welding parameters and the microscopic aspects of weld region are similar to those of the conventional stainless to mild steel clads. The HT80 steel parent plates, however, are accompanied by a problem that intense shock wave in welding causes tear cracks at the plane of weakness due to impurity segregation in the plate. In addition, the welding with large charge mass and large preset angle results in carcking and adiabatic shear displacement in the stainless steel of weld region.
