Short-time creep tests at 400°to 500℃ on mild steel and high-strength steel by a cantileverbending method originally developed by G.T. Harris and his coworkers revealed the transient creep characteristics such as follows : The stress-distribution of a non-linear shape on the cross-section of the specimen plastically deformed with a constant bending moment depends upon the length of the transient stage of the creep, accompanied by a slight decrease in the normal stress at the outermost layer, and then the log-log plots of the strain-rate at the outermost fibre of the specimen versus the time for respective creep-curves generally show approximately straight-line relations similar to those in the conventional tension creep test, except that the plots deviate slightly from the straight-line in certain cases evidently due to the conditions of varying stress.
