An attempt is made in this report to explore residual stress patterns resulting from explosive bonding. Two-dimensiona macro-residual stresses acting in parallel with plane of plate have been measured on an explosive clad plate made of 18 Cr-8 Ni stainless steel and mild steel. The testing techniques are based on cutting out small blocks from the clad plate, etching off successively thin layers of each block and noting, in these procedures, the resultant deformations of the blocks. The results show that the biaxial residual stresses exhibit, independently of the explosive direction, about similar distributions over the clad metal and bonded zone, that is, compression in the surface layer of the stainless steel, tension in the bonded region and compression in the interior of the mild steel, though the tensile stresses are slightly higher in parallel with the explosive direction than in perpendicular to it. Also, annealing the clad at 610℃ converts the residual stress patterns to tensile stresses remaining throughout the stainless steel and compressive stresses in the adjacent layer of the mild steel.
