A series of measurements on various types of distrotions and residual stresses have been performed in covered arc welding, submerged arc welding and semi-automatic CO_2 arc welding of groove in low carbon steel plate, focusing on the mutual relations between transverse shrinkage, longitudinal total, elastic and plastic strains as well as the effects of welding process and heat input upon them. The interesting facts revealed are as follows : 1) Submerged arc welding which is executed with a higher welding speed than the other processes produces fanlike distortions of halves of base metal plate on either side of the weld line in addition to the conventional contraction of weld zone, then transverse shrinkage is distributed in an arched curve along the weld line, being maximum in the middle, and longitudinal total strains do in a chevron along the transverse direction such that the shrinkage is the smallest at the weld line. Especially the welding process of a very large net heat input causes a longitudinal expansion in the weld zone and a transverse expansion at both ends of weld. 2) Longitudinal inherent shrinkage generally increases with an increasing net heat input, though submerged arc welding of a very large net heat input conversely reduces it. 3) CO_2 arc welding of a comparatively small net heat input has an intermediate tendency of distortion between covered arc welding and submerged arc welding, but it causes a remarkably large inherent shrinkage.
