Transient thermal stresses in weld heat-affected zone are estimated by the method such that a round bar specimen set in the rigid frame is subjected to a thermal cycle simulating weld heat-affected zone. The trend of the thermal stress in HY80 steel is compared with that in a mild steel. Effect of transformation characteristics during cooling on the thermal and residual stress is found in HY80 steel.
