Joint strength of welded plates including a soft interlayer is discussed analytically and experimentaly in connection with the width and thickness of the plate and the size of the soft interlayer. The strength depends upon the relative thickness X_t of the soft interlayer to the plate thickness and the ratio of width to plate thickness. The joint strength is given as a function of these parameters. Ductility and fracture mode are also obtained by the experiments.
