There are few studies on the relationship between critical stress and residual diffusible hydrogen content H_R when the temperature in weld metal becomes a crack initiating temperature. It seems that residual diffusible hydrogen content H_R relates with critical stress of HAZ cracking more closely than initial hydrogen content H_O. This paper describes relationship between critical stress and residual hydrogen content at temperature 100℃ in weld metal. Residual hydrogen content H_R is measured by means of mercury method and experimental equations between H_R and thermal factor ΣD△t which relates with thermal cycle in weld metal are deduced. Conventional equation of thermal factor ΣD△t is deduced from 117 data on thermal cycles by use of regression analysis. Implant tests are carried out under various conditions of initial hydrogen content H_O. It is shown that critical stress is approximately obtained from residual diffusible hydrogen content (H_R)_<100> at temperature 100℃ in weld metal under various initial hydrogen contents.
