The authors first investigated the changes of stress and strain produced in the interior of two thin plates when they were cut loose from the body of weldments. One of them was taken longitudinal to the axis of weld and the other transverse to it. As a result we found that in the case of longitudinal plate the change of longitudinal strain △ε_x was linear across the thickness, whereas in the case of transverse plate the change of transverse strain △ε_y was not linear. However, we proposed a method of determining the distribution of △ε_y throughout the thickness and introduced a new method of measuring a triaxial residual stress system making use of △ε_x, △ε_y and the stresses left in these thin plates cut loose from the body. Secondly in order to verify the above characteristics concerning the change of strain induced by cutting, we performed a three-dimensional thermal elastic stress analysis by means of finite element method, whereby a newly proposed method of measuring a triaxial residual stress system has been proved to be reliable. Then this method was employed to measure residual stress distribution throughout the thickness to butt welded joints in the thickness range of 50 mm through 150 mm.
