Initiation and growth of crack in welded joint are influenced by local stresses-strains associated with weld thermal cycles. Recent development of FFM (finite element method) computer analysis enables us to calculate the local stresses and strains. In the present report, attention is paid to the quantitative evaluation of local stresses and thermal strains in the vicinity of welds with particular reference to initiation and growth of crack from weld defects. Studies are made both on local stresses-strains in the vicinity of root of welds and on residual stresses and thermal strains in the vicinity of a pre-existing weld crack by successive welding. At first a two-dimensional FEM analysis is carried out for obtaining local stresses at the root of butt welded joint under various conditions of groove shape, plate thickness and throat depth. The susceptibility to cold cracking under various crack controlling parameters is discussed based on the calculated results of the local stresses. Secondly, an analytical study on thermal strain cycle, especially in the vinicity of pre-existing weld defects, is carried out based on the results of a thermo-elastoplastic analysis by the finite element method. Fracture mechanics approach is tried to make assessment of significance of elastic residual stresses and metallurgical variables of the material due to welding.
