A sequence of physiological mechanisms underlie the photoperiodic induction of insect diapause. Some of the mechanisms such as the action of circadian genes and the changes of bioamines with day length were recently focused for investigation, and their involvement in photoperiodism became obvious. There are many other phenomena regulated specifically by day length. Most of them are accompanied by diapause and observed after diapause onset. However, other phenomena observed before diapause onset seemed to be important for the determination of the diapause. I will focus on these phenomena using several insect species : first, the physiological events with chronological order from photoperiodic reception to diapause onset in the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae, pointing out their importance in the diapause, and next, instances of physiological events which lead insects to diapause in the phytophagous lady beetle, Epilachna vigintioctopunctata, and the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The reserve for the survival during diapause also seemed to be important as a determining factor of diapause.
