The Persistence of a Learned Response in the Egg-larval Parasitoid Ascogaster reticulatus Watanabe (Hymenoptera : Braconidae)

The effects of both time elapsed and unrewarding experiences on the persistence of learned responses by Ascogaster reticulatus females were examined. The strength of a female response was measured by the distance she walked while exhibiting the characteristic antennating response along the learned cues (tea leaf extract) in a Petri dish assay. The learned response of females gradually decreased with time after conditioning (rewarding experiences), while it decreased much more quickly after unrewarding experiences. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of an additional rewarding experience (re-conditioning) on females that ceased responding to learned cues after unrewarding experiences. Females receiving the additional rewarding experience recovered their responses and they re-learned the previously learned cues efficiently. Behavioral plasticity in learning may be advantageous for A. reticulatus females to utilize the learned cues effectively and thereby to search for hosts.
