Mating Sequence and Evidence for Synergistic Component in Female Contact Sex Pheromone of the White-Spotted Longicorn Beetle, Anoplophora malasiaca (Thomson)(Coleoptera : Cerambycidae)

When male and female of Anoplophora malasiaca encountered, the male was observed to hold and mount the female, and then to bend his abdomen toward her abdominal tip. The male was observed to approach or hold the female only when he touched her with his antennae and/or tarsi. During holding and mounting, the male frequently touched the female elytra and pronotum with his palpae. Males showed similar mating attempts toward a glass dummy treated with solvent extract of female elytra. This indicates the presence of a female sex pheromone that is perceptible by direct contact. When the extract was chromatographed on silica gel, only the fraction eluted with hexane released a series of mating behavior (including abdominal bending) in males. The pheromonal activity was apparently enhanced when the hexane fraction was mixed with the 15%-ether-in-hexane and/or ether fractions. The contact sex pheromone of this beetle was therefore considered to consist of a less polar compound (s), probably hydrocarbon (s), and a more polar compound (s) that functions synergistically.
