In the tussock moth Euproctis taiwana (Shiraki), mating occurred intensively during dawn light, but the phoretic egg parasitoid, Telenomus euproctidis Wilcox, became behaviorally active only during the day. E. taiwana egg masses that were covered with scale hair derived from the anal tuft of the female moth were heavily parasitized by T. euproctidis. In the field, more parasitoids were attracted to the scale-hair wad derived from the female anal tuft after pheromone release than before pheromone release. This attractiveness, however, decreased after hexane rinse. GC analyses confirmed that sex pheromone was extracted from the scale hair of anal tufts of virgin females. It was exposed to the air in the laboratory for 24h after pheromone release. The amount of pheromone in the extract was 13-36ng/female immediately after pheromone release but decreased to 2.7ng/female after 12h of exposure, and to the noise level of FID recording (<0.5ng/female) thereafter. GC-EAG analyses, however, revealed that male moth antennae apparently detected trace pheromone amount even after 48h. In the field, scale-hair wads rinsed three times in hexane and treated with synthetic moth sex pheromone seemed to attract more parasitoids with increasing amounts of pheromone (0.1 to 10ng/hair wad). This indicates that trace amounts of pheromone were adsorbed to, retained on and released from the anal tufts of female moth and scale hair covering egg masses after oviposition, and that they provided kairomonal cues for host location by the parasitoid.
