Different Electroantennograms and Field Responses in Males to Virgin Females between Okinawa and Ishigaki Strains of the Tussock Moth, Orgyia postica (Lepidoptera : Lymantriidae)

Male response in Electroantennogram (EAG) and in field attraction to females of the tussock moth Orgyia postica (Walker), of which females are wingless and unable to fly, were examined in two geographically separated populations from Okinawa Is. and Ishigaki Is. In the GC-EAG analyses, both the Okinawa and Ishigaki males showed a single EAG response to the extracts of Okinawa females and two EAG-responses to the extracts of Ishigaki females. On Okinawa Is., the catches of traps baited with Okinawa females were significantly larger than those baited with Ishigaki females. In Ishigaki Is., Okinawa females were also generally superior in capturing male moths as compared with the Ishigaki females. In field observations conducted on Okinawa Is., the attraction of males by Ishigaki females diminished after around 21 : 00, while that by Okinawa females continued thereafter. This suggests that Okinawa females may release more attractive sex pheromone, or the same pheromone but for a longer time, than the Ishigaki females.
