Diapause responses of two geographically different populations of an egg parasitoid Telenomus euproctidis Wilcox (Hymenoptera : Scelionidae) are compared using two host species. The Ibaraki (IB) strain of the parasitoid is phoretic on female adults of the tea tussock moth Euproctis pseudoconspersa Strand in the temperate region, and the Okinawa (OK) strain on Euproctis taiwana (Shiraki) in the subtropical region. When wasps of the two strains parasitized on non-diapause hosts of E. taiwana or E. pseudoconspersa, all or most of their offspring emerged as adults without entering diapause under either short-day (LD12 : 12) or long-day (LD16 : 8) conditions. However, when diapause eggs of E. pseudoconspersa were used as hosts, all of the IB offspring and more than three-quarters of the OK offspring entered diapause. Therefore, the kind of host egg and the host physiological state affect diapause determination in this parasitoid. The intensity of diapause in the parasitoid, as represented by the length of the egg stage, was significantly higher under short-day conditions than under long-day conditions. After chilling at 5℃ for 30 or 120 days, both wasp strains terminated diapause and emerged almost synchronously as adults upon transfer to 20℃ irrespective of the photoperiod. These facts suggest that the two geographic strains of this parasitoid can enter diapause and tolerate cold, though the OK strain without diapause hosts probably has no chance to enter diapause in Okinawa. Egg masses of E. pseudoconspersa collected in January, 1996, contained only first instar larvae of T. euproctidis, indicating that this parasitoid enters diapause as a first instar larva.
