Trunk trail distribution of Lasius fuliginosus has been observed in Kyoto, Japan for 8 years. Each colony began constructing its trail networks in early spring, expanded them during summer, then reduced the trails and stopped foraging outside the nest before the onset of snow. This cycle was repeated every year. Though the trail network itself was quite dynamic, some of the trails appeared to be stable whereas others were temporary. Networks never overlapped between neighboring conspecific foreign colonies, and no direct conflicts were seen between the workers. This suggests that the trail network system of L. fuliginosus is a territory system that might enable workers to avoid direct conflicts on their foraging territories.
