Effects of (E)-phytol of five lepidopteran species in prey-locationg behavior of a predatory stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata, were examined. The lepidopterans as test prey insects were larvae of the pellucid zygaenid, Pryeria sinica, a giant silkworm, Samia cynthia ricini, an armyworm, Pseudaletia separata, the cabbage armyworm, Mamestra brassicae and the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella. Nymphs of E. furcellata attacked intact larvae of all these insects. Larvae of P. sinica, S. cynthia ricini, P. separata and M. brassicae contained (E)-phytol which had been identified from Spodoptera litura larvae as a proboscis-protruding inducer of this bug. Larval extracts of P. sinica, S. cynthia ricini, P. separata and M. brassicae elicited the proboscis-protruding behavior in the bugs, and this response depended directly on the (E)-phytol content, whereas those of E. kuehniella grown on wheat flour were not effective. Nymphs of E. furcellata preferred larval extracts of P. sinica, S. cynthia ricini, P. separata and M. brassicae containing (E)-phytol to those of S. litura fed with bean sprouts lacking (E)-phytol in glass rod bioassay. Although larval extract of E. kuehniella alone was not effective, a mixture of larval extract of E. kuehniella and (E)-phytol was active in the preference response. These results indicate that (E)-phytol in larvae of lepidopterans serve as a key chemical associated with prey for this generalist predator. However, nymphs of E. furcellata preferred larval extracts of P. sinica, S. cynthia ricini, P. separata and M. brassicae to synthetic (E)-phytol alone. Therefore, some unknown chemical factors besides (E)-phytol also appear to be used by this predator to choose its prey.
