1. About 20 hours before hatching , the catfish embryo develops the gland-like cells in the epidermis of the rudiment of the maxillary barbel (Fig. 1, B). These cells reach their maximum development at hatching, showing the loose network structures in their cytoplasm (Fig. 1, C). 2. The gland-like cells become situated near the distal end of the maxillary barbel with development of the barbel. Most of them disappear within about 120 hours after hatching (Fig. 2, B). 3. The gland-like cells are devoid of similar granules to those of the hatching gland of other species. Moreover, the cells with the same structure as that of the above-mentioned gland-like cells but much smaller in size are found in the epidermis of the mental barbel, about 24 hours after hatching (Fig. 2, A). From these results, it seems impossible to suppose that the gland-like cells are identified as the hatching gland. 4. On the nature and the detailed process of appearance and disappearance of the gland-like cells further studies are needed.
