Although the occurrence and histological structure of the clavate cells in teleosts were studied comprehensively by Oxner (1905), the fine structure of these cells was investigated only by Sato and Ishida (1964). In the loach the clavate cells are found in the most part of the head and body skin except barbels and lips. They spread over the main portion of the skin epidermis between superficial mucous cells and basal epidermal cells. They are round or oval in shape and variable in size. They are generally several times as big as the ordinary epidermal cells. Electron microscopy has revealed that the clavate cells are always surrounded by elongated epidermal cells and never in a direct contact with one another. Complicated interdigitations and desmosomes are found between clavate cells and adjacent cells. A spherical nucleus is located in the center of the clavate cell, but it is occasionally so much deformed by deep indentations that it appears as if forming two separate nuclei. Mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, Palade's granules, a few lysosomes, and endoplasmic reticula are found to be restricted within a narrow area around the nucleus. These structures found in the circumference of the nucleus may correspond to the "dunkeler Hof" named by Oxner (1905). In the osmium-fixed preparations, the cytoplasm of the clavate cell appears to be consisted of a great number of fine vesicles, measuring about 250-300 A in diameter. The clavate cells were subjected to the histochemical tests, but their chemical nature could not be ascertained. Judging from the results obtained in the present work, it seems possible that these cells have no secreting function, but store some substances which may presumably be released by such an accident as an injury to the skin epidermis, and that the "heller Hof" called by Oxner (1905) and "auβerer and innerer Sekretraum" described by Lucowicz (1966) might be artifacts induced by histological procedures.
