Most of the head epidermis of this fish consists of clavate cells which are several times as big as ordinary epidermal cells (Fig. 1). In clavate cells fixed in Apathy's or Hermann's fluid, a "dark halo" of Oxner was found around the nucleus (Fig. 2). Electron microscope observations of osmium-fixed clavate cells showed the presence of mitochondria and Golgi apparatus (Figs. 3 and 4). The mitochondria were not scattered in the cell, but were restricted within a narrow area around the nucleus, These structures may correspond to the "dark halo." The rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, commonly found in ordinary epidermal cells, was not observable in this cell. But vesicles, supposedly a deformation of the endoplasmic reticulum, were found in the vicinity of the nucleus. In the osmium-fixed preparation, no distinct structures other than those mentioned above were visible. The clavate cell interlocked with abjacent cells by fairly complicated infoldings (Fig. 4).
