This new species Gregarina diestrammenae n. sp. was found from Diestrammena japonica Karny at Narutomura, Yamaguti Prefecture in June 1948. The host was also infected at the same time by another unrecorded species of Gregarina. These two gregarines are easily distinguished from each other in the shape of sporont. Diagnosis of Gregarina diestrammenae n. sp. Sporonts biassociative, elongate ovoidal in adult, being more slender cylindrical in immature stage. Primite: Protomerite subglobular, well rounded at apex, usually wider than high, widest at just above the base. Deep constriction at septum. A wedge-shaped projection sinks into deutomerite at central portion of septum. Deutomerite widening out rapidly from septum to shoulder, and almost regularly cylindrical from thence downward, widest at or just above end. Posterior end truncated. Satellite: Protomerite greatly flattened, from three to five times as wide as high. Deutomerite ovoidal, widest at shoulder, tapering gradually from thence to a well rounded posterior end. Measurements: Maximum length of associations 1.5mm. Length of sporonts generally 500-600 μ, width 250-300μ. Ratio on the average LP:TL=1:4.6, WP:WD=1:1.8(Primite), LP:TL=1:9.1, WP:WD=1:1.3 (satellite). Ectoplasm of protomerite thin but of deutomerite well developed, sarcocyte especially think, 25μ on the avarage. Endocyte very dense, yellow orange. Nucleus spherical to ovoidal, 40-50μ in diameter, with 3-5 spherical karyosomes. Cephalont: Minimum length of trophozoites is 50μ. The trophozoite spherical but it becomes ovoid to cylindrical in shape with growth. Epimerite like a simple spherical hyaline button on a short stalk. Cysts spherical, 600-800, in diameter. Two layers of envelope developed, outer layer gelatinous, 120-150μin thickness, inner one transparent, 8-15μ in thickness. Central mass 450μ in diameter on the avarage. Spore ducts 2 to 3 in number, 12μ in diameter, 1.7-2mm. in length. Spores discharged in chains, cylindrical, 4 by 7μ, with a small cup-shaped projection at each end. Host: Diestrammenra japonica Kkarny. Habitat: Intestine. Localities: Narutomura, Tabusemati, Yamaguti Pref.
