Many reports have been published on the death during or just after massive doses of irradiation given to laboratory animals (Gerstner et al., 1956; Smith and Thomson, 1959; Allen et al., 1960; Egami et al., 1962), and it has been thought that the cause of sudden death in rodents was damage to the central nervous tystem resulting from irradiation. Three series of shielding experiments were carried out with the goldfish, Carassius auratus, using a radiation source of γ-rays from cage type Co^<60>, with a dose rate of 190r/min. in air, the total dose being 100kγ. Parts of unanesthetized fish were shielded from γ-rays with lead blocks, 10cm in thickness. If the head region only was irradiated while other parts were shielded, all fish treated in this manner died at the end of irradiation. However, when the head region was shielded, and the remainder of the body exposed. the irradiated fish survived for about 10 days after irradiation. From these results it is concluded that in the goldfish as in mammals the central nervous system in the head region plays an important role in instantaneous radiation death following massive doses of ionizing radiation.
