The zoeal development has been studied in the following four species of the subfamily Xanthinae : Leptodius exaratus, Cycloxanthops truncatus, Macromedaeus distinguendus, and Atergatis reticulatus. Features common to all of these are as follows : Zoea are comprised of four stages ; the cephalothorax has a slender rostral and a dorsal spine, and short lateral ones ; articulation of the telson occurs in stage III ; postero-lateral spines of the abdomen are well-developed in pleonites III to V, and become gradually longer as development proceeds ; the abdomen bears paired lateral processes on pleonites II and III ; antenna I develops an unsegmented endopod in the last stage ; setations of endopods of maxillae I and II are 4・2(6)-1 and 3・2・3(8), respectively ; those of protopods of maxillipedes I and II are 3・3・2・2(10) and 1・1・1・1(4) ; the base of the maxilla I has 5, 8, 9 and 13 setae from stages I to IV ; setations of the base and inner lobe of the coxa in maxilla II are 4・5 and 1・3 in stages I and II, 5・5 and 1・4 in III, and 7・6 and 1・5 in IV, respectively. Chief differences among the 20 known species may be seen in types of antenna II (A_1, B_5, B_7, and C_1) and the telson (A_<2+1>, A_<2+0>, A_<1+2>, A_<1+0>, and A_<0+0>), presence or absence of spinules on the spinous process of antenna II, and the number of apical hairs on the exopod of antenna II. A key to these species is given in Table 3.
